Open your TD Bank account with ease. All details in this comprehensive guide. Don't miss the bonus.

TD Bank, one of the largest banks in the U.S., has a nearly 170-year history. Best known for its extended hours and superior customer service, they offer multiple types of personal bank accounts, loans, and other financing.

How to open a TD Bank account

You can open an account online or in person at a TD Bank location. You will need your:

  • Driver's license/state ID
  • Social Security number
  • Personal/contact info (date of birth, address, phone number, and email)
  • Money for an opening deposit (cash, debit card number, or routing and account numbers for another account)

Before you fill out the application, you'll need to decide what type of account you want to open. If you're not sure which account is best for your needs, TD Bank's account selector tool can guide you in the right direction.

Locate this tool at the bottom of the checking or savings account webpage, answer a few questions, and receive your personal account recommendation.

Read on to see all the individual details about each type of account.

Is TD Bank safe?
TD Bank is FDIC-insured, meaning that your funds are insured up to $250,000 if the bank ever fails.

TD Bank also uses advanced encryption and two-step verification, which are security measures used by most big banks.

Types of Accounts

TD Bank offers three types of checking accounts and two types of savings accounts, all of which can be mixed and matched or used individually.

All checking accounts charge monthly maintenance fees, but most of those fees can be waived by maintaining a minimum balance or making monthly deposits.

  • Maintain a minimum $2,500 balance every day in the account
  • Keep a minimum $25,000 daily balance across all TD accounts (including savings accounts, loans, and mortgages)

Savings Accounts

TD Bank has three different savings accounts, all with different interest rates. Each account comes with free mobile deposits and the ability to use any TD Bank ATM. You can also link any TD Bank savings account with a TD Bank checking account to set up overdraft protection.

Savings Account Types and Fees

TD Simple Savings:

  • 0.02% APY for all balances

You can waive that monthly fee when you:[1]

  2. Are age 18 or younger or 62 or older
  3. Have your account linked to an eligible TD Beyond Checking Account or TD Complete Checking Account
  4. Open as an IRA

You can also have the monthly fee waived for the first 12 months by completing a monthly recurring transfer of $25 or more from an eligible and linked TD Bank Checking account.

TD Signature Savings:

  • Offers higher APY rates for linking any personal or small business checking account, credit card, home equity, or mortgage through TD Bank
  • No required minimum opening deposit
  • Waives non-TD Bank ATM fees, when you maintain a minimum $2,500 daily balance
  • Charges monthly fee of $15

You can waive that monthly fee by maintaining a balance of at least $10,000 a day or by linking an eligible TD Checking account.
