What to Buy at DISH
- The Hopper 3. DISH's new 3rd edition Hopper DVR service is one of the best of its kind. It allows users to record 16 shows at once and store up to 2,000 hours of programming (500 hours in HD). It can power up to 7 TVs at the same time. DISH often offers a free Hopper or a discounted monthly fee to new customers or those who upgrade.
- America's Top 120+. This is the mid-level package that offers more than 190 popular channels.
- DishLATINO. DISH's core Spanish and English TV packages, featuring soccer, sports, telenovelas, movies, news, music, and entertainment.
DISH Anywhere is DISH's online video site, featuring TV shows and movies. DISH customers can log in to access networks they subscribe to at home, such as HBO, Starz, TNT, and more. DISH subscribers can also schedule and program their DVR through DISH Anywhere.
With Sling DVR or Sling Adapter, subscribers can also watch all live and recorded TV on their DVR through their computer.
But Watch Out
- Additional equipment costs. You only get the Hopper included in the base package, which has the ability for 16 tuners. If you have more than one TV you'd like to record and watch from, each additional receiver (called a Joey) will cost $7/mo.
- Monthly DVR fee. There is also a monthly DVR service fee of $15 for the Hopper 3 (though there is often a $5/mo discount).
- No NFL Sunday Ticket. YouTube has exclusive rights to the NFL Sunday Ticket. And overall, DISH Network has less sports programming than its competitors.
Credit qualification: DISH requires a credit check before signing up. Good credit grants access to cheaper, promotional prices. But bad credit will increase certain prices (like the DVR activation fee) and may require an initial deposit.
