Study: Happiest Cities in South Dakota
"Great Faces, Great Places" is South Dakota's official slogan, and the Mount Rushmore State is overflowing with plenty of both. Aside from its rich natural history and the stark beauty of the Badlands, South Dakota offers residents one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country along with a cost of living that's below the national average. Whether you prefer a bigger city like Sioux Falls or someplace that's a little less well-known, these are the places where residents have the most reasons to be happy.
Study Methodology
We considered cities both large and small for our study, including those with a population of 5,000 or more. To get our top 10, we used U.S. Census data and FBI crime report information to assign each of them a ranking. Our final list reflects the cities that rated the best overall for each of the following:
- Restaurants
- Crime rate
- Commute
- Departure time
- Income
- Divorce rate
- Housing
Dinner out on the town with friends is a great way to unwind after a long workweek. To see where you'll have the most opportunities to socialize, we considered the number of restaurants per capita in each city.
South Dakota isn't known for being a high crime state but some cities may be safer than others. Our next measure centered on the odds of being the victim of a violent crime.
One of the best things about living in a less populated state is the fact that there are fewer cars on the roads. We considered the average commute time for each city to see where the drive to work is shortest.
If you believe that the early bird gets the worm, you may unconsciously be increasing your happiness level according to researchers. The next thing we looked at was the percentage of residents who leave for work before 5 a.m.
Making a lot of money won't necessarily make you happier, but it can be a major stress reliever if you're constantly strapped for cash. We were curious about where residents bring in the biggest paychecks, so we looked at the median household income for each city.
Divorce is an unpleasant experience that can certainly impact how positive your attitude is. The cities on our list have the lowest percentages of people who are divorced.
Spending a lot of money on your mortgage or paying high rent can leave you feeling stressed. The last thing we looked at was the percentage of income residents in each city spend on housing.
