Best Buy Promo Code and Tips to Save Money

For gadgets, games and appliances, you want to get the best deal so you'll have money left over for your next splurge. Here are the best promo code and tips for shopping at Best Buy, so you'll always get a deal.

Tips and Tricks to Save Money at Best Buy

With just about everyone owning a smartphone, tablet and video game console (especially if you have a male aged 12 to 35 in your household), it's no wonder that Best Buy is bustling. Another reason: smart shoppers get a deal when they get Best Buy discounts and take advantage of its robust price match program. Read our tips for getting the best deals at Best Buy before you make your next trip to the store or BestBuy.com.

Tips for Getting the Best Deals at Best Buy

  • Don’t be afraid to negotiate. Most prices aren’t final at Best Buy and it doesn’t hurt to ask the salesperson if they can do any better. You’ll have better luck with more expensive items that carry higher margins, and you can also ask for a discount when buying items in bulk (like a TV and Blu-ray player). And check for damaged packaging and open box products, which you can also haggle over for a lower price.

  • Check out the competition. Unlike most major retailers, Best Buy will price match both local stores and online stores like Amazon. Never buy anything before double-checking the price elsewhere.

  • Become a My Best Buy member. This is a great program for frequent Best Buy shoppers. You’ll receive one point for every dollar spent, with 250 points earning you a $5 reward certificate. Members also get free shipping with orders over $35. If you spend over $1,500 or $3,500 at the store each year, you can qualify for the Elite and Elite Plus programs, respectively, which offer bonus points and free shipping with no minimums.

  • Sign up for College Student Deals. If you’re in school and have a .edu email address, take advantage of Best Buy’s College Student Deals. You’ll get all kinds of discounts and promo codes, like $50 off MacBooks or iMacs and free shipping.

  • Search for coupons and promo codes. Most of Best Buy’s online promotions are sales rather than discount codes, but you can sometimes find an extra deal. For example, a code might give you an extra 10% off when purchasing two or more cameras and accessories.

When to Shop at Best Buy

  • Black Friday. Best Buy carries an abundance of deals on Black Friday, if you’re willing to go out on Thanksgiving Day. In 2014, the store opened at 5 pm on Turkey Day, with tickets being handed out two hours in advance. But the deals may have been worth it to some: early shoppers could snag a Samsung Galaxy S5 for a dollar (with a two-year contract), the iPad Air 2 for $400 ($100 savings) and the Sony Smart Wi-Fi Built-In Blu-ray Player for $50 ($70 off retail).

What to Buy at Best Buy

  • Smartphones (unless you’re with T-Mobile). Best Buy often offers smartphone trade-in deals for customers when they renew their contracts with Verizon, AT&T or Sprint. A recent deal offered up to $150 in Best Buy gift certificates, which could then be used to purchase the iPhone 6 16GB for $50. Another offer allowed customers to receive a free $100 gift card when purchasing certain Samsung models.

  • Game Console Bundles. These promotions aren’t just limited to Black Friday deals; check on game consoles at Best Buy regularly to catch some big savings. For example, the store recently offered the PS4 console, a remastered version of The Last of Us, and a PlayStation camera for $400 (the regular price for just the console).

  • Video Games. Most video games are priced comparably to competitors like Amazon and Game Stop, and if you don’t find a better deal elsewhere, most seem to have Best Buy’s Price Match Guarantee. If you don’t feel like going to the store, Best Buy also offers free shipping on orders o $35 or more, just like Amazon.

  • Home Appliances. Surprisingly, Best Buy’s home appliance prices are competitive with, if not better than, those at major home improvement stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot. Plus, even if you find a better deal elsewhere, Best Buy will price match appliances as well.

What Not to Buy at Best Buy

  • Movies. Best Buy’s Blu-ray and DVD prices aren’t terrible, generally just $2-$4 more than Amazon’s prices, and most movies aren’t marked with the Price Match Guarantee. Save a few dollars by ordering online, but know that you won’t be breaking the bank if you want to pick up the latest blockbuster and have it in hand today.

  • Other Items Not Covered by Price Match Guarantee. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t buy these items, but savvy shoppers should know what is not covered by price match. Bundles, refurbished items, daily deals and pre-owned items are not included in the price match guarantee, so make sure you have found the lowest offer before purchasing any of these items.
